The Breadwinner is based on true-life stories of women in war torn Afghanistan.  Eleven-year old Parvana has been trapped inside her family's one room home since the Taliban took over Afghanistan.  When the Taliban hauls her father away, Parvana realizes that she must become the breadwinner for her mother and siblings.  To do so, Parvana must disguise herself as a boy.

The setting for the story is set in the early years of the Taliban regime.  The story itself describes the harsh realities of life for girls and women in modern-day Afghanistan.
