Teacher Discussion Guide

How do you handle losing a war?

Can you be friends with the "other side?"

What if your family is gone?

               Just what do you do?

These are questions that Will Page must answer at the end of the Civil War . . .

The author, Carolyn Reeder, is a teacher and a history buff.  Her interest in the Civil War was piqued by a vacation spent visiting the battlefields at Antietam, Gettysburg, and New Market.   After visiting the local museums in the Shenandoah Valley and the Virginia Piedmont, she read firsthand accounts of the war's effect on local citizens.  The book Shades of Gray grew out of these experiences.
