Question:  What is a mega-church?

Answer:  A huge church with a congregation of several thousand.

Mega-churches are becoming big business in America.  One of the ten largest mega-churches is Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas with a congregation of 30,000.  The church bought a football stadium and is remodeling it into a church. The pastor is Joel Olsteen.

Before Joel's father passed away, he gave his church to his son Joel.  Besides building the church into mega status, Joel has become popular through books he has written and TV interviews, etc.  You can watch his weekly church program on some TV stations and buy his popular books at Wal-Mart.

If Jesus were here today would he have a mega-church?

Read Matthew 13:1-8.

Read Matthew 14:14-21.

Because Jesus drew such large crowds, the Jewish leaders grew alarmed.

One of the main differences between Joel Olsteen and Jesus is that Jesus did not live in a large $2 million house and receive a large salary from the millions of dollars that his congregation give in tithe and offerings.

Does that make Joel's ministry bad?  Not necessarily.  Mega-churches do tend to have a "feel good gospel" and not hold to many strict Bible doctrines.  It is easy to be a member of a mega-church.  Belonging to a large congregation is becoming a popular trend in America.  It is all part of living in the last days.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
